Analog VoIP Gateway

Thanks for returning. You're a very smart person.

Analog VoIP Gateway

An Analog VoIP Gateway is used to translate IP voice traffic to analog traffic. Typically, an Analog VoIP Gateway is used to connect an IP PBX (IP based phone system) to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Alternatively, an Analog VoIP Gateway can be used to connect two legacy (traditional) phone systems together via an IP network for the purpose of toll by-pass or, to allow a remote office or home user to connect to the corporate telephone system via the Internet.

An Analog VoIP Gateway can also be used to leverage existing analog telephones with an IP PBX.

Analog VoIP Gateway Manufacturers

Analog VoIP Gateways range in port size; with certain manufacturers offering anywhere from 4 to 48 FXS/FXO ports. There are a number of Analog VoIP Gateway manufacturers. The most popular include:

  • AudioCodes
  • Grandstream
  • Mediatrix
  • Quintum
  • Vegastream

Although there are numerous choices, most gateways offer similar features and functionality, which often leaves price and product availability as the only distinguishing factor.

Garrett’s Notes on Analog VoIP Gateways

Analog VoIP Gateways are an integral part of every IP phone system deployment. At the very least every business should have one for PSTN connectivity for “fail-over” life line capability. Mission critical business communications should not be left to an often unreliable VoIP network connection.

As important, Analog VoIP Gateways offer considerable cost savings due to their flexibility. They allow you to leverage existing analog handsets and even utilize toll by-pass between multiple locations. In both cases you win.
