Eurpoean Cellular Providers Begin to Offer Unlimited Plans
It looks like the disruptive pricing of Voice over IP has reached beyond copper line carrier and is now disrupting cellular price plans in Europe. According to a press release sent out by an independent online retailer of Orange cellular service, MobilePhonesontheWeb.com, perspective customers of the service can now get free unlimited calls and texts on Orange deals in addition to already market-beating offers, including a wide range of 12 month contracts with free line rental for the full 12 months.
Now that is something new in the cellular world - free and unlimited, especially for sms text messaging, the fastest growing form of mobile communications, and a huge money maker for cellular carriers. Be reminded that this is a European promotion, not one here in the states. While I will not hold my breathe waiting to see similar offerings from stateside cellular providers, it is interesting to see that cellular providers would rather compete with VoIP providers than adopt the technology, and offer it as an additional service.
Seems to me it would be more beneficial and profitable (in the long run) to do the later, but hey no one has ever claimed that these 1.0 providers have clue as to what it takes to deliver and profit from a 2.0 service.
