Yes It Hurts As Badly As It Sounds
Andy Abramson picked up on news that some carriers in the UK are making the IP communications stack that makes VoIP calling possible over WiFi somewhat “invisible” on the new Nokia N95. This is similar to what carriers such as Cingular, T-Mobile, and Sprint (among others) have (and will probably continue to do) done in the past with other phones.
Why is this a bit of a surprise?
It is surprising as European cellular providers, on the surface, seemed to be very progressive in accepting the inevitable reality that voice over wifi is the future, with some even offering the service as a trial for select customers. Possibly these trials did not go well, or more likely, they went to well, and the carriers are looking to squeeze the last little bit of revenue out of their customers before opening up the flood gates with a mobile voip offering.
Don’t fret too much though - Andy gives you the scoop on how to re-enable the IP communications stack in his post. Check it out.
