Mobile VoIP Provider Gets $10 Million

mobile voip Future is Bright Enough to Land Serious Cash

It does not look like all of the press surrounding cellular providers blocking mobile VoIP providers is stopping venture money to flow to mobile VoIP providers as Australia’s Mig33 has received $10 Million in series A financing lead by Accel Partners and Redpoint Ventures. Mig33 offers cellular phone users inexpensive mobile VoIP calls, instant messaging, text messaging and social networking and community features, that let users share content while chatting in forums or specific chat rooms they create and share with friends. Depending on the country being called, Mig33 says users can save up to 95% on their international calls and roaming costs.

Now it looks like Mig33’s offerings are going to be more than just a plain old cellular service replacement. Given Ted Wallingford’s piece last week that cell phones will become the dominant means of social networking (which I agree 100% with), maybe Mig33’s mobile social networking features will be enough to make that $10 million investment a worthwhile one.
