Google to Acquire Skype?

Garrett Smith · April 1st, 2008 · 1 Comment

No this is not an April fools joke.

Tech Crunch is reporting that they are hearing rumors that Google is in talks with Skype and the flavor of those talks is acquisition/high-level partnership.

This is certainly interesting and definitely has some legs. After all eBay is still pretty clueless on how to realize the full promise of Skype and Google already has experience with GoogleTalk and GrandCentral.

I think the biggest play here for Google, is the mobile one. After all, Google has made it very clear that they want to own the mobile search/advertising business and given Skype popularity (and growing popularity of Mobile VoIP services) I could see this purchase/partnership as another foot in the mobile door for Google.

Look for more on this story as it develops.
