Phil Wolff of Skype Journal has an excellent post about the growth of Skype’s international call growth and their piece of the total international call traffic. Based on TeleGeography Research Group’s TeleGeography 2007 : Global Telecommunications Traffic Statistics and Commentary report. The report shows that Skype’s international traffic grew over 80% in 2006, times more then the circuit switched market.

Although this is staggering growth for Skype (and great news for eBay), Skype still is not viewed as a threat by the Telco’s. Skype still has to find a way to get more of their users to become “active users” who actually use the paid service (currently only 4% of all Skype subscribers are active users.). One way, and perhaps the most difficult way, is to figure-out how to get more businesses and home offices using Skype as their primary means of communication. Until then Skype will continue to be a very small blip on the telco’s radar.
