Plain Old VoIP Service (POVS)

by Garrett Smith on December 3, 2006

Note: I did some searching and could not find anyone using this terminology in public to describe VoIP calling, I have used this before and have heard a few use it in conversation, but no public declarations. It is a big world so if you or someone you know has, please send me the link to the reference. I certainly do not want to plagiarize anyone’s ideas…

The recent news of SIPphone’s new broswer based VoIP calling service and all of the exciting micro-niche VoIP service offerings that are coming to the forefront everyday got me thinking that VoIP calling mimicking traditional phones calls should now be classified as Plain Old VoIP Service (POVS).

Plain Old VoIP Service (POVS) is nothing more then placing a phone call over the Internet or a network utilizing an ip phone, Analog Phone with Telephone Adaptor, or Gateway. Plain Old VoIP Service is just like Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS); a commodity service that allows you to communicate with others (just through a different network).

Plain Old VoIP Service (POVS) is what companies like Vonage, iConnect Here, SunRocket, and BroadVoice offer. There is nothing special, unique, or valued (other than price) within the service - it is just another way to make phone calls. With all of the “new breeds” of VoIP calling (present and future), using the term Plain Old VoIP Service (POVS) globally will immediately seperate the unique VoIP service from the Plain Old VoIP Service (POVS) and make communicating the differences to those outside of the industry much easier.

So let’s hear it…

What do you think about using Plain Old VoIP Service (POVS) to describe placing a phone call over the Internet or a network utilizing an ip phone, Analog Phone with Telephone Adaptor, or Gateway?

Just what telecom needs…a new acronym. :)

I hint sarcasm in your response and to some extent I agree that there are far too many acronym’s in the telecommunications space, but I feel that for ease of conversation and better consumer education, plain-vanilla VoIP service has to be defined and “labeled.”

Plain Old VoIP Service (POVS) fittingly describes the offerings by most VoIP service providers. There is nothing innovative (as compared with newer VoIP offerings) and it is “old” as it related to newer VoIP services.

Besides, would you rather write Plain Old VoIP Service or POVS?
