Sad…But True
Earlier this week VoIP Service provider Nuvio, issued an open letter to Linksys and Cisco requesting that they unlock the devices of those customers left in the dark by the SunRocket bankruptcy. While they should be applauded for attempting to assist these customers, the reality is SunRocket had the devices locked at the factory by Linksys to prevent customers from migrating from their service, much in the same way US cellular carrier lock cellular phones to their network. It is called churn protection.
Other than being good samaritans, there is really is no reason for Linksys or Cisco to assist customers in unlocking the devices. It will cost them time, money, and headache. Why would they do that when they can just sell the customer (through their new service provider) a new device?
