Nokia is the King of Mobile VoIP

Is Any Other Company Looking to Compete?

nokiaMaybe it is just good PR. Maybe is just good strategic positioning. More than likely it is both, with a sprinkle of vision. Whatever it is, Nokia, in my view is the king of mobile VoIP. Everyday it seems I see a release, a story, or a new phone that talks about Nokia and mobile VoIP. Today, WiFiMobile launched a Mobile VOIP service on the Nokia S60 handsets which enables users to make free calls to each other over Wi-Fi regardless of location.

I wonder when the rest of the cellular and smartphone manufacturers are going to wake up and smell the future.

[...] Garrett has an interesting post today on mobile wifi and Nokia’s leading position in this arena. I agree with him on some points and disagree with him on most. Nokia have definitely taken the lead but hundreds of other manufacturers are closely examining this area especially with the impending arrival of wimax. I picked up my second “hybrid” handset this week a Nokia E65 and I have to say it doesn’t compare to my previous one. Its ultra complicated with its sip client being so difficult to set up that its practically unusable other than by downloading Truphone or Fring which both do all the hard work for you. I have attempted at numerous stages over the past three days to set up my own sip server on the Nokia and have now effectively given up whereas with my other model it was a 30 second breeze. On my other phone I have used 15 different sip setups for testing and they all work perfect every time including Gizmo mobile. Wifi mobile which Garret mentions are effectively doing the same thing as Truphone but you are then tied into their system and being charged for it whereas Truphone is free for the moment. I prefer to be able to choose my own sip provider and that’s why the Nokia is now relegated to a normal phone. Whats the difference in the phones you ask? Well the Nokia that is now being used as a normal phone is $400 more expensive than the one that I use as my Gsm/Wifi unit.
