Linksys WRTU54G to Power T-Mobile HotSpot@Home

FierceVoIP is reporting that T-Mobile has submited a wireless router for testing by the Federal Communications Commission which will be used to enable a T-Mobile residential VoIP service. T-Mobile’s wireless router partner? None other than Linksys. Not that I am surprised that T-Mobile would partner with Linksys on this, but I am surprised they did not go with one of their handset manufacturers, like Motorola, who has already touted similar products.

The Linksys WRTU54G is a really slick device. It features:

  • (1) WAN Port
  • (4) RJ45 Router Ports
  • (2) FXS Ports for analog telephones
  • (2) GSM Card Slots
  • Linksys 802.11 Wireless-G WiFi Connectivity

Who Will Provide the VoIP Service?

This is a good question and it will be interesting to see if T-Mobile will partner with an existing VoIP provider or provide VoIP service themselves through a white label program (or self-built network). With Vonage stock in the dumps, might they be a good acquisition for T-Mobile?
