Service Provider Locked Linksys Devices Can Be Unlocked
PhoneBoy pointed to a post today that I had written a while back in regards to Nuvio asking Linksys to unlock SunRocket devices to assist customers affected b the SunRocket bankruptcy and how he felt that locked Linksys devices can’t be unlocked due the fact that the service providers settings are burned into the device. Well, unfortunately, you can unlock locked Linksys device.
Folks have been unlocking locked Vonage PAP2 for over a year. I even know one guy who unlocks them for you, for a small fee! While I don’t claim that a regular old end user can unlock them, they can be unlocked if you have the right tools and skill set.

I’ve seen the threads on DSL Reports where people have “liberated” Linksys devices from Vonage. I have seen the steps needed to do this. If I had the time or inclination, I could certainly do them. One dirty secret: If you ever factory reset one of those “liberated” devices, you’ll quickly find the device will be locked again. That’s because of those pesky “burned in” factory defaults.
The main reason Linksys devices can generally be unlocked is because providers do not avail themselves of the security measures provided by Linksys for the express purpose of securing the devices against end user tampering.
Yeah, I know a guy who “has” a set-up where he can unlock (or you can) unlock your device via a website. It is pretty cool.
