Thanks for returning. You're a very smart person.
I have been getting a ton of API related press releases the last two months. So many that at one point I contemplated why Smith On VoIP did not have an API. I mean, if everyone is doing it, why not me?
Luckily, I came to my senses and decided that a Smith On VoIP API would end up in the same place as the last two months worth of API press releases; in the trash. That is, unless, the person sending the press release is Shai Berger and the company he is talking about is his company Fonolo, the vastly needed deep dialing service that allows consumers to deal with large companies over the phone. This is one API, that could truly enable many awesome applications.
In fact, I think the service and API are so great that after reading the press release, I put my entrepreneur pants on and thought about a nice little service that could be created with the Fonolo API….
The website would be targeted towards sales and business development professionals. The basic premise is that outbound sales and business development professionals have been know to go IVR dumpster diving in order to get the “decision maker.” Using the Fonolo API and a slick, web-based “find the decision maker” interface, you would create a service that allows sales and business development professionals to “deep dial” a company’s IVR in order to find the decision maker (or whomever they need to speak with). Combine this with your own API, which allows businesses to hook into their CRM allowing for seamless data transfer. Monetize the site with a monthly recurring subscription fee or make it free to use and smash ads in the users face.
Okay, the idea isn’t one that you will retire on (if you do…throw me a bone?), but hey what do expect for free? On a serious note, check out the Fonolo API if you have the developer jean, or like me you just want to dream about, “What if’s.”

Fonolo took top honors from the judges at today’s Mobilize conference in San Francisco. Their product was a big crowd pleaser. I too am a fan of their product too. I’m not sure why companies don’t actually open up their IVR trees to enable Fonolo & other companies to provide similar services. It would cut down on the telecom costs for these companies as well as provide their consumers with easy access to what they are looking for.
The one thought that comes to mind as to why these companies wouldn’t want to release their phone menus is because they would lose the ability to market new products & services to their consumers while they are on hold & fumbling through the IVR tree.
