Disappointed With Your Skype Phone?

Posted: October 3rd, 2006 | Author: | Filed under: VoIP Commentary | 1 Comment »

Martin Geddes posting over at Skype Journal on the plight of Skype Usb phones got me thinking about how poor my experience has been with the vast majority of the usb phones for Skype. Martin’s biggest gripe and one that I agree with has to do with the fact that the phones feature the traditional PSTN keypads. For most (Martin and myself included) they use Skype to call friends or colleagues through the buddy list. While Martin did not seem to think that this post had much value (or importance) as a “hardware guy” I believe this is a great post and one that Skype and those who are producing Skype phones need to read.

I think a great Skype Usb phone would be a PDA type device that was WiFi enabled. It would feature a Speakerphone, BlueTooth, and a touch screen that mimicked the actual Skype client you have on your desktop. Possibly add some additional data features, for price under $200 and I think you’d have something that the business (and residential) user would enjoy.

[...] The only reason I am writing about the D-Link DPH-10U is that it further highlights the points made by Martin Geddes about Usb phones, that I highlighted in this post yesterday. Yet another major manufacturer who does not get it. Sometimes I wonder if the engineers and product marketers have ever used Skype or any similar service prior to designing a product intended to be used with it. From what I can gather from most of products on the market for these services, the answer is no.
