The recent news that News Corp’s My Space, the social networking site with a reported 47 Million users, will be offering a VoIP service is a great move for News Corp. Why? Because My Space users will pay for the ability to phone friends and family (or complete strangers for that matter) using some sort of VoIP based client that is a plug-in to the site.
The potential for revenue generation from the service is immense. Free calls, laced with advertisements, or low cost unlimited calling plans economical enough for the youngest of users. Beyond revenue, VoIP adds yet another reason for those who have not already joined to sign-up for the site. VoIP by far will have a bigger impact on My Space’s new users and revenue, then it will on eBay’s.
