Thanks for returning. You're a very smart person.
I haven’t written much commentary of late, due to the Near Future of VoIP series, but this morning I caught Om Malik’s piece on the bleak future of telecom via Techmeme. The story reminded me that - contrary to Om’s statements - telecom does have a bright future.
It’s not, however, in the way we once knew it. If we have learned anything this past week from the Near Future of VoIP interview series is that telecom is thriving - but new telecom has a different look and feel from the one that Om described.
New telecom companies, lead by folks like Mike Oeth, Peter Diedrich and Dan Hoffman among others, spoke of no such bleakness when discussing the market outlook and their own companies potential for success. This isn’t just PR - this is the result of their companies doing today what other telecom companies should have been doing for years.
Innovating through enabling their users.
These new telecom companies are changing the face of what telecom is by showing businesses how telecommunications can do more for them then simple voice communications. They are showing businesses that telecommunications can transform their operations in order to meet the ever changing demands of today’s business environment.
With that, out are the old and slow - in are the new and nimble.
Possibly because they companies aren’t the same old faces, folks aren’t yet looking for the right ones when talking about the outlook for the market. But this changing face is showing the world that telecom can be a prosperous place - it simply has to be done right.
Sort of what many other industries are learning right now.
